Well here we are, February 2016, one month of 12 already done. Everyone is calming down on their new year resolutions, the gym is thinning out and the odd donut is sneaking back into our diets (or is that just me?).

I shared a personal story with the group at the Midlands Business Network last week, one that I want to share here too.

As a parent, one of the most disheartening things you can be told is that your child needs to repeat a year at school. Straight away you wonder what went wrong and think about what you can do to make sure your child passes the retake year. I have been in that situation as a Dad and it was tough, eventually we didn’t go ahead with the retake year but continued with appropriate goal setting, timed targets and a support team of extra curricular activities and tutors. We live in a society where progress is a really big deal. When faced with my own child’s progress (or supposed lack of) I was able to act quickly and rationally, but when faced with business progression those qualities are sometimes harder to find.

A lot of the people in the network could resonate with my story. They wanted to progress, as we all do, but progress was slow or even nonexistent. In my past business I too was the same, I knew what I wanted to happen but progress was slow. In essence if a teacher reviewed my progress at the end of the year I think I would have been asked to retake too.

One of the ways we can avoid the repeating trap is to make a 5 year, then 1 year plan and break down the goals into reachable targets. Find people who you can share these plans with who can hold you accountable.

If you started 2016 off with huge plans that have struggled to get off the ground, then why not set yourself some targets for February. The biggest step you can take is to write them down and put them somewhere you will see them. Here’s ZEAL’s (we have to do these now as we have put them out for the whole world to see!!).

You are more likely to accomplish a goal if you have a visual reminder of it. Seeing these doodled targets every day inspires us to get to work and progressing with our goals.

If you are serious about growing your business then target setting is something you need to be doing. I promise that once you have a clearer picture of what you need to do to make this year YOUR year its much easier to make quick progress and get yourself out of/avoid the repeat year trap.

“If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.”

Its never too late to change, or to start something new, so here’s to a great February. Let us know how you get on with target setting over on our ZEAL CREATIVE Facebook page.
